Not many people pick up a sport in their mid-twenties and then represent their country within five years. Laneah Bryan is not many people.

Born and raised right here in El Paso, Bryan was a standout athlete long before flag football was ever part of the picture. At Franklin High School, she was a force — averaging 20.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 3.5 steals per game in her senior season. Her team won the Region 1-5A title. She earned District 1-5A MVP. The year before, she took home the El Paso Times All-City MVP award.

That talent earned her a Division I scholarship to the University of New Mexico, where she played 121 games for the Lobos from 2014 to 2018. When her final college game ended — a WNIT loss to TCU in March 2018 — Bryan walked off the floor thinking her competitive career was over.

She came home to El Paso. She joined a local flag football league, just for fun. But fun has a way of turning into something bigger when real talent is involved. Bryan started competing in tournaments across the country. USA Football scouts took notice. And just like that, everything changed.

In the 2023 IFAF Americas Continental Flag Football Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina, the U.S. Women’s National Team went a perfect 6-0. Bryan was a key reason why. She helped seal a 26-21 gold medal victory over Mexico — and had the game of her life doing it.

“That was the most fun game I’ve ever played in,” Bryan said after the win. “I’ve played college basketball, which was an amazing opportunity, but playing against Mexico in that championship game — the atmosphere was insane.”

Back-to-Back Gold and a World Championship

The 2024 IFAF Flag Football World Championship in Lahti, Finland was the biggest stage women’s flag football had ever seen — 23 national teams from six continents competing in the largest field in tournament history.

Bryan and Team USA rose to the moment. They defeated Mexico 31-18 in the gold medal game, with Bryan making a clutch interception late to seal the win. It was the U.S. Women’s team’s third World Championship ever, and it came at the most pivotal moment in the sport’s history — right as flag football prepared for its Olympic debut.

Bryan is the co-owner of two El Paso-based companies — MountainStar Solar and G.O.A.T. Roofing and Construction. She did not stumble into entrepreneurship. She learned the industry from the ground up, working for another company first, before going out on her own.

“I worked for another roofing and solar company in the past, and I loved working with homeowners and doing the job the right way,” Bryan explained. “I love being my own boss. It comes with challenges, but it has made me better.”

But what drives her most is not the business itself — it is the people she employs.

“What I love most and what brings me the most joy is providing an opportunity for our employees that can change their lives and help provide for their families. We really try to create a culture of growth.”
